How to Protect Your Garden from Possums

Possums love fresh buds, fruit, and new growth. While they are part of the ecosystem, they can decimate a garden overnight if left unchecked.

Physical Barriers

Netting is the most effective way to protect fruit trees and veggie patches. Ensure you use "wildlife-friendly" mesh that prevents animals from getting entangled. Guarding the trunks of individual trees with smooth metal or plastic sheeting can also stop them from climbing.

Deterrents and Repellents

Possums have a keen sense of smell. Natural repellents like garlic sprays, quassia chips, or blood and bone fertiliser can discourage them from browsing certain areas. Motion-activated lights or sprinklers are also excellent temporary deterrents.
